Maiolica painted with grotesque ornamentation in the a berettino style – pale blue ground reserved with grotesques, covered in cobalt blue glaze and highlighted with white. Unknown coat of arms in the centre.

Purchased at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 in Paris as part of a set, the plate is registered as a “blue bowl with white decoration (Faenza)”.

The precisely crafted copies from Giuseppe Cantagalli’s workshop were based on original Italian Renaissance maiolica plates and vases – in this case a plate from the Casa Pilota workshop in Faenza from ca. 1530.
